Visual Approach

In the very beginning and also in the end there will be used two old Armenian poems, which are thematically connected to the story.

The film structure will consist of six parts. Each part will start with a collage of artwork and archive material as well as
personal things and is thematically connected to the content of the concerning part of the film. The collage is inspired by pictures of the Armenian artist Arthur Sarkissian, who kindly allowed the director to use his pictures in the film. In the puzzle-‐like artwork there will be used also acryl-‐animation technique.
An important element will be documents & stamps, like border stamps or birth/death certificates of family members, old job references of the protagonist, certificate of his German naturalization, passports, etc. All these documents are of a great importance for all kind of migrants. So, I will integrate them into the film, in the collages and on other places throughout the film when needed.
Voices and different styles of music will be another element in the film, which will be part of the storytelling as well. Music from the famous Armenian composer Komitas will be used throughout the film as a leading musical theme. When Manuel sings in the local Bavarian choir, the audience will hear a German folk song about home. Moreover, I will use compositions from Robert Schumann («In the stranger»), modern songs from the experimental Armenian-‐Russian group “Deti Picasso” and Arabic sounds. There will be also scenes, where Manuel and his daughter sing Armenian songs together.
The film will focus on the unexpected emotional moments that occur throughout the journey, whether captured by me on the small HD camera I carry with me at all times, or the perceptive work of the DoP documenting my family’s interactions.
